Mammograms – Early Checks Save Lives!

Living Well Black celebrates National Mammogram Awareness Day! If you’re 40 or older, get yours! Mammograms help find breast cancer early, sometimes before you can feel it. Finding cancer early makes it easier to treat and can give you a better chance to get well.

Why Get a Mammogram?

  • It can find cancer years before you notice anything is wrong.
  • The earlier cancer is found, the more treatment options you have.
  • If you’re 40 or older, or have a family history of breast cancer, regular mammograms are really important!

Who is Affected Most?

  • Black women are more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, even though we get breast cancer less often. This happens because our cancers is found later or they have types that are harder to treat.
  • Younger Black women (under 45) are more likely to have a type of breast cancer called triple-negative, which is harder to treat.
  • Women with dense breasts may have a higher chance of getting breast cancer, and it can be harder to see cancer on their mammograms.

What Can You Do?

  • Get your mammogram regularly. Talk to your doctor about how often you need it.
  • Ask questions about your breast health, especially if you have dense breasts or a family history of cancer.
  • Help spread the word. Some people may not know about mammograms or can’t get to a doctor easily.
  • Let’s work together to make sure everyone knows how to stay healthy!
