Genetic researchers need to diversify their study populations to include more people of African descent and people with more than one ancestral heritage. According to this article in Science 97% of genetic research has focused on people of European descent. Only 0.9% of research included African and African descended people. Furthermore, genetic researchers exclude people of many different ancestral origins believing that the results are too confusing due to so called “genetic noise.” This lack of diversity leads researchers to make conclusions based on incomplete information and can result in flawed treatment decisions like missed diagnoses, incorrect dosing of medicines, and inaccurate tests.
